In this photographic series, Alejandra Cano tells us the the mystic path of Mezcal, from being a precious gift to the tavern, where it alleviates the troubled spirits

Through this wonderful collection of images that distill and life, the artist will take us on a journey from the to the cup; from the Palenque, its stills and its mules, that kisses and caresses, that absolves, comforts and resurrects damned.

Phantom Galleries is the artistic director of San Jose's ArtBox Project in partnership with founder Tina Morrill.

The ArtBox Project brings original works of art into San Jose neighborhoods by coordinating talented artists to paint their unique imagery on utility boxes sponsored by neighborhood sponsors.

VANITAS at KALEID Gallery, opens First Friday June 7, 2013, part of San Jose's South FIRST FRIDAY Art Walk.

Vanitas vanitatum omnia vanitas. ~ Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

A Vanitas is a work of art based on the idea of the transience of human existence and the knowledge that all has it's end. They have been common throughout the history of art, sometimes incredibly morbid with a sharp focus on death, others with obscured meaning hidden beneath a veneer of beauty. We'd like to invite you to create a Vanitas and interpret this classical theme in your own unique / visionary way.

The VANITAS exhibit will be our June thru mid July exhibition. In addition to KALEID artists, we are reaching out to other artists in the South Bay area in an effort to share our space and community with other talented artists.

Rocks, Waves & Clouds: New Scroll Paintings of Matthew Bailey Seigel

Similar to traditional Asian scrolls, Matthew's paintings capture the impermanence of an idea or location. His new paintings were inspired by the natural beauty of a low tide walk along Maine's rocky coast.

Overwhelmed with the colors, forms and relationships of rocks, the sea and sky, Matthew immediately set up an impromptu studio on his father's farmhouse porch. The result are these modern, vibrant scrolls in two sizes, acrylic on synthetic rice paper, hung on aluminum rods.

His brush work is fast, improvisational, fluid, playful, never repeating, conveying core elements of "rocks, waves and clouds". Distilled to their essence. The only element missing is the smell of balsam fir.

Matthew is excited to have a solo show in the Velcro Gallery and invites you to experience Maine.

The gallery is open with the artist in attendance on Saturdays May 4 & 18, Noon-6pm.

New completed painting (on a corner utility box) by the amazing Frances Marin for our ArtBox Project on the corner of Pearl Ave & Branham Lane (off of 87) in San Jose.

The sponsors wanted some historical content on their box, so Frances came up with the great idea of creating a perspective for the viewer of being inside the old General Store looking out.
