Flores, Kille First Friday March 6th at KALEID

KALEID Gallery is pleased to present two featured exhbitions by Eddie Flores and Jeremiah Kille for the month of March.

Artists' Reception First Friday March 6th, 7-9pm

This event is part of the South FIRST FRIDAYS artwalk. Free and open to the public

Suicide Noir: The Reduction of Eddie Flores an art exhibit in the medium of photography, illustration, and graphic design. It explores the human notion of love, in the context of self-reduction and negation, to arrive at a deeper and more meaningful place of light and possibility.

About the artist:
Eddie Flores comes to us from the Marianas Islands (Deep Pacific), with a background in illustration, painting, photography, digital media and spontaneous travel. His inspiration is derived from all things natural: including his relationship with the ocean, Eastern and Western philosophy, cheesy UFO abduction stories, street and bourgeoisie culture, lollipops, Courvoisier cognac, hopscotch, scotch, and long walks on the beach.

The Edge of Wonderment by Jeremiah Kille
Death is something that is eminent to all, yet we confront and interact with death in very different ways. Through culture, religion, upbringing and personality we each have a unique way of viewing or relating to death. I am fascinated with the extremes of individuals responses.

At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, the circus was a form of entertainment, that captivated peoples imaginations. Since then, people moved on to "the new craze", some other form of entertainment. The circus came to end. I chose to use the circus, as a catalyst to explore the idea of finality. Many of the images are of elephants after the crumble of the "Big Top", misplaced and without work or purpose.

About the artist:
Jeremiah Kille uses traditional mediums, as well as materials that are used to construct surfboards. Building surfboards is something he is connected to deeply-using different types of resins and pigments to express and explore my ideas, it is a natural progression in his image making.

Jeremiah lives in Santa Cruz where he builds surfboards and makes art. He is currently completing his BFA degree at San Jose State in Pictorial art.

KFJC 50th Anniversary Art/Logo Contest

In the fall of 1959 KFJC began broadcasting out of a closet in Mountain View, CA. It has been nearly 50 years of broadcasting for KFJC and we are excited to make this year more memorable than any year before.

KFJC has grown out of that closet and into a poineer in non commercial radio in the Bay Area and worldwide by continuing to be a conduit for new and interesting audio art and information, especially the sorts that are unavailable elsewhere.

As we turn fifty this year we decided to invite the individuals and communities that have continued to support us and keep our vision alive to have fun and celebrate with us in the unusual way we do things. What better way to celebrate than to get creative!?

Throughout the years we have invited artists to design our Annual Fundraiser Artist T Shirt. We're proud to include Robert Williams, Darren Grealish, Mike Davis, Arik Roper, among our contributors.

This year for our 50th Anniversary, we invite you! The KFJC 50th Anniversary Art Contest is our invitation to artists of all kinds to put into creation the vision we've been sending you through the airwaves all these years. Let's celebrate!

Categories include: Mixed Media/Freeform, Artist T Shirt Design and KFJC Logo. There are cash prizes for winning entries in each category.

The selected winning pieces and honorable mentions will also be included in an exclusive KFJC Art/Logo Exhibit to be held at KALEID Gallery, San Jose. An artists’ reception will be held First Friday September 4, 2009.

Gianfranco Paolozzi- accordion performance
“I first heard the sound of an accordion at the age of 5; I closed my eyes and it was all around me. That sound was stuck on my brain, on my skin, and in my heart. A Christmas present from my parents, my first and only accordion is the one gift I still embrace. Every note out in the air has a story; I am reminded of people I have lived with and the towns I have lived in. Today, I continue to play the red accordion and exude the sound of passion that I’d never want to lose.”

SWAN Day San Jose

swan_logo_color_rgb.jpg

The women of Alameda ArtWorks are proud to offer an open invitation to join the celebration of women in the arts of many disciplines in San Jose's first annual celebration of SWAN Day (Support Women Artists Now!). This event is part of the second annual international SWAN Day celebration.

"Women artists are creating change in their communities and around the world. They are inspiring. They can touch our deepest emotions or take us on a journey to a distant place or time," said Martha Richards, the co-founder of SWAN Day. SWAN Day is an annual event taking place on the last Saturday of Women's History Month. The idea for SWAN Day grew out of a collaboration between Martha Richards of the Fund for Women Artists and Jan Lisa Huttner of Chicago's WITASWAN (Women in the Audiences Supporting Women Artists Now). This day of celebration will help people imagine what the world would be like if women's art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our lives. The long term goal of SWAN Day is to inspire communities to recognize and support women artists as a basic element of civic planning. Since Silicon Valley has such an abundance of talented women in the arts, it is appropriate that these women have now come together in recognition of SWAN Day.

All are welcome to attend the Alameda ArtWorks' Networking Day as part of SWAN Day festivities; included in the planned events are live musical performances, open artists studios with work available for sale, an art exhibit of over 30 women artists, live poetry readings, two informative panels of speakers including Jane Przybysz, Ph.D, Executive Director of the Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and a special apperance by noted author DR. Kate Evans. The morning panel of speakers will forcus on Women and the Business of Art while the afternoon panel will focus on Women and the Spirit of Art. Break out sessions will follow each panel of speakers to provide attendees with ample time for conversation and networking.

SWAN Day San Jose at the Alameda ArtWorks takes place on March 28th, 2009 from 10 am until 5 pm and is located at 1068 The Alameda in San Jose.

For more information on SWAN Day, visit http://www.womenarts.org/swan/

Poetry Evening at Medrano Gallery

Come out and support two local poets, Mark Heinlein and Judith Sutton this Friday, March 20 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Mary Medrano Gallery.

Mark Heinlein’s work cuts to the emotional bone of our daily activities. From eating leftover kung pao chicken, flocking Christmas trees, grocery shopping, to contemplating the magnitude of war and the inevitable struggles with mortality, to the fine caresses of lovers, Mark’s work finds beauty and humanity in the mundane aspects of our lives. A finalist for the 2008 Edwin Markham Poetry Prize, his work has been performed live on the radio, and he has read his poems at the Cinequest Festival and at bars, galleries, bedrooms and bookstores throughout Northern California.

Judith Sutton is a poet and teacher at Saratoga High School. She was recently awarded by the Mayor of Saratoga - and her students just published a letterpress book on Mutanabi Street, an ancient bookstall bombed in Baghdad.

There will also be live music in the courtyard by the very soulful, Kaila D'Sa.

Why do some people believe hoaxes, even after they've been debunked? Why do stories of monsters persist for centuries? By turns playful, grotesque, glib and profound, Trina Merry and Kate Stewart use paint, ink, and things they found at the scene to explore the anatomy of a hoax and why we love to be lied to.
