Call for Artist Vendors -2009 Sing Tao Street Fair in Redwood City

The City of Redwood City has asked Art on the Square to provide an art component to the Sing Tao Street Fair. We will have close to 50 spaces along Broadway. Other vendors will be mainly Asian owned businesses; massage, herbs, home repair companies, non-profit groups, and others. It’s a great opportunity to reach a new demographic.

Sing Tao is a local Chinese language newspaper. Their Expo celebrating Asian culture has previously been held at the San Mateo Expo Center, and typically draws 30,000 attendees who pay an entrance and parking fee. Redwood City successfully partnered with Sing Tao in August for the Olympic Telecast at Courthouse Square, attended by over 4,000 people. Sing Tao decided they would like to hold Sing Tao as a street fair and found working with the City of Redwood City to be very easy. In 2009 the event will be held on Broadway in downtown Redwood City and is expected to draw large crowds, given its history of strong community support, and the fact that it’s now free and close to a CalTrain station.

Sing Tao Street Fair application will be available next week. Please e-mail ArtontheSquare@sbcglobal.net if you're interested in getting it. Please note that this is a separate application from our summer Art on the Square shows. Application packets must be postmarked no later than 3/20/09.

ALSO: Art on the Square 2009
Apply now for Art on the Square 2009. Four juried outdoor shows this summer at downtown Redwood City's beautiful Courthouse Square. Fine art and fine craft only. 10' x 10' and 10' x 20' spaces available. Download application here.

Dates & times:
Fri 6/19, 5 - 8:30 pm with Music on the Square
Fri 7/24, 5 - 8:30 pm with Music on the Square & Sat 7/25 11 am - 8 pm with the PAL Blues Festival
Fri 8/28, 5 - 8:30 pm with Music on the Square
Fri 9/25, 5 - 8:30 pm with Music on the Square & Sat 9/26, 11 am - 8 pm with the Redwood City Salsa Festival

Call for Artists Chicana/o Biennial

Call for Entries at MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana

Exhibition: June 5 - August 15, 2009

MACLA is pleased to announce its third Chicana/o Biennial, an exhibition and public forum conceived to take inventory of and invite reflection every two years on the continuously emergent energy, critical edge, and aesthetic interventions within contemporary Chicano art.

MACLA is looking to challenge the questions and concerns that are currently being brought forth in the contemporary art world. As such, this year's biennial takes a thematic approach by asking the following questions:

1) What are the pressing concerns at this moment in time (politics)
2) What does Chicana/o art look like today? (aesthetics)
3) How do artists engage the community? (activism & organizing)

We are looking for artwork that is politically charged and aesthetically innovative on many different levels and that addresses one or more of the above mentioned questions. We are also interested in work that depicts the intersection of art, technology and new media. We welcome proposals and projects from disciplines/genres/ activities that are not normally displayed in the gallery setting. All artwork must have been created within the last three years (2006 to 2009).

Looking to invert the dynamics of the art world biennial, this exhibition is a no-fee juried exhibition open to all artists who self identify as Chicana/o. This biennial is about contemporary art through the lens of the Chicano experience, as nuanced and varied as that might be. MACLA is interested in work that is both about identity politics and beyond. This exhibition is open to artists whose work deals with all issues and is created in all mediums.

Submit artwork and for more information go to www.callforentry.org (this is a free service)

Timeline: Deadline to submit work: Friday, March 20, 2009, 11:59 pm PST for online submission.

Jurors: Favianna Rodríguez, artist Eugene Rodríguez, artist and professor of Art at De Anza Community College and Alejandra Chaverri, MACLA's Associate Curator.

Questions: email to biennial@maclaarte.org
