Gianfranco Paolozzi at Caffe Trieste

GP_CaffeTrieste.jpg

Now is Already Past by Gianfranco Paolozzi
Caffe Trieste, 315 South First Street
Artist's Reception First Friday, Sept. 5th, 8pm 'til late
in conjunction with South FIRST FRIDAYS artwalk

This new series of metallic works on canvas is a contemplation of being "present" for Gianfranco. "I start with a line. I start with a color. I start on one canvas. After the first canvas absorbs the initial lines the second canvas has marks, a continuation of what was present, now past, on the first canvas. The third and forth canvasses follow. All 4 white surfaces have marks. I'm here. I was there. All the lines become actions of the past. I continue to mark them and I continue to create the past of the present pleasures and pains".

Exhibit on view through September.

Photo Landscape Adventures by photographer Rob Lehman

This showing brings to you a sampling of the photographs I have taken during recent years. My love for landscape and nature scenes has taken me throughout California, my home, and beyond. I first learned the basics of black and white photography at San Diego State University in 1975, and have become more and more driven toward those basic teachings in my pursuit to create images. I enjoy the "feel" and resolution of a large or medium format camera as opposed to a digital camera, and this is where I am most comfortable and confident.

Our world is continually changing. We are witnessing vanishing wild lands and landscapes that have been ruined by development and climatic changes in our ecosystems. I hope to record what I can with my camera, before some of our beautiful natural treasures are forever changed. -Rob Lehman

Retrospective from Collage to Oil Portraits by Terenia Offenbacker

Art is my ongoing search for methods of personal expression--art is the core of my being without which my life would be empty and void.

My creativity remained dormant for over 25 years following a life threatening car accident. Upon family urging to renew my relationship with art I enlisted in a collage course. Despite having no previous experience in collage, I felt it was a good means of reintroduction to art. Collage allowed me to express myself artistically while simultaneously rebuilding my confidence using brushes without the worry of producing fine lines.

My collage and mixed media work is based upon a search for varied textures and unique materials. It’s fun and surprising to see how they integrate. All materials utilized in my creations have been salvaged, it feels particularly good recycling while producing the images I love. - Terenia Offenbacker

Amazing Paintings by Michele Troutman

Art For Well Beings presents paintings by Michele Troutman.

Paintings created over the past three years illustrate Michele’s marvelous journey. In 2005 at age 29, holding a brush for the first time, she began painting under the direction of Judy Gittelsohn and has leaped through learning curves that take most of us a life time. Michele demonstrates her ability to interpret the world with the touch of a poet.

A reception for the artist will be held on September 13, 2008 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Emerson Center Gallery - Art For Well Beings - 2800 West Bayshore Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303.

Bonnie J. Smith at Alyis N Rose

Like%20Water%20On%20Rock.jpg

A collection of Bonnie J. Smith"s fiber art work is at Alyis N Rose, 1686 Lafayette Road, Santa Clara. Title of exhibit is "Found Work". My art work is of a very personal nature and I have found that half way thru most projects I have to stop and take a break. I realized one day that I had accumulated a small body of work and that is why I called the exhibit "Found Work". This particular grouping has a connection to the earth.

Exhibit is on view through November.

Inklings at Double Punch SF

KALEID artists Mark Damrel, Andy Gouveia, and Pellet (aka Kyle Perera), along with Ryan De La Hoz (Deli), are all in a group show at Double Punch in San Francisco called Inklings.

Inklings is a group show that embodies the unique personality and characteristics that artists are able to give their ideas, simply by putting pen to paper. Inked pieces can create a broad range of feelings from the action of a comic panel to the intimacy and spontaneity of napkin sketch. Most great ideas start with a sketch, and sometimes the finest ones are completed not with canvas and paint, but with bristol board and a good pen. With the wide range of tools that technology has given artists over the years, Inklings is a nod to the old school; a reminder of the importance of foundations and remembering art’s roots.

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 13th, 2008 @ 7pm

Exhibit on view from September 13 - September 30th.

Modern Superstitionist

The Modern Superstitionist Exhibition

Artwork that reveals the real things we possess and do to keep those mysterious unseen forces from creating chaos in our modern world.

Search deep and you will find no 13th floor in most buildings. If you happened to sneeze, why would a complete stranger offer to bless you?

Is there an unspoken, unseen power we keep at bay with our superstitionist behaviour? Do you follow it with a rabbits foot, or rebel against it and break a mirror?

Superstition, Real or Not? You Decide!

We will have a group of local artists, some old friends, some you may not have seen yet! There will be live music and spoken word.

Bring your friends and family to our home and come enjoy an evening of art, music and the discussions of the superstitionist!

Luis Gutierrez at Art Object

LuisG.jpg

The ArtObjectGallery announces the opening of a thought provoking new exhibit featuring Los Gatos artist Luis Gutierrez's most recent Wounded Warrior series of paintings titled "PTSD" (post traumatic stress disorder disorder). These powerful portraits reveal Luis's sense of what lies beneath the surface of those who are ordered into the hell that is war. Luis channels his frustration at the largely unseen, but heartbreaking real costs of war into expressive brush strokes and richly textured surfaces of these inner profiles.

Also on view is work by photographers Terri Garland and Deborah Mills Thackrey.

Reception for the artists on Friday, September 26 from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.

Distinctive City Lecture Monday, Sept. 15th

The findings shouldn't be that big of a surprise, we've all known the challenges of being a San Jose resident artist and the results of the many studies that show the importance of artistic thinking and problem solving for successful business have been published, posted and quoted for the last few years. But now perhaps, with Dr. Markusen surveying the results and making recommendations, action can begin for a new era of arts and creativity in San Jose. See you there!

The Distinctive City Lecture - Dr. Ann Markusen, Director of the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs

Monday, September 15 6:00-7:00 pm
San Jose Repertory Theatre, 101 Paseo De San Antonio

Crafting the Distinctive City: San Jose hosts the most diversified "left brain" high tech economy in the world, but its "right brain" labor force is under-developed. Markusen will show how cities around the globe are creating portfolios of distinctive activities as a hedge against growing competition and how human and cultural capital is becoming central to this project. Artists and designers are under-represented in San Jose for the size of its workforce, yet they contribute directly to the local economy through the self-employed income they earn and by providing area employers with the visual, performance and writing skills that make their products successful. They also make cities more attractive places to live and work, helping to retain and attract other entrepreneurs and skilled workers. Savvy cities elsewhere invested strategically in artist live/work and studio buildings, artist's centers, designated arts districts, smaller scale and neighborhood artistic spaces, festivals, grants and technical assistance program to shore up and diversify their arts and cultural talent pool.

Professor Markusen is the author of numerous books and articles on artists, cities, and high-tech economic development. She has served as a Brookings Institution Economic Policy Fellow and a Fulbright Lecturer in Brazil and has consulted for the Clinton Administration, the World Bank and the OECD.

This lecture is part of the 2008 Great Cities Speakers Series.

RFQ Kit of Parts Artists Roster

The City of San José Public Art Program is inviting artists from Santa Clara County to apply for a Kit of Parts Roster. This roster will be used to select artists for a range of artist-designed amenities commissioned by private housing developers and public agencies.

The “Parts” projects that are anticipated for artists to design include functional elements for buildings, streetscapes, parks and trails (e.g. benches, fences, bike racks, and interpretive signage). This roster is intended for artists working in all media. These projects are particularly appropriate for artists who are new to the public art field as they tend to have smaller budgets and scopes of work. For example, a painter could create two-dimensional designs that could be cut into the steel surface of a gate or the back of a bench. Or two-dimensional drawings may be translated into tile mosaics. Both 2-D and 3-D artists will have opportunities to design objects such as door handles and architectural appliqués. The complete RFQ here.

Application Deadline: October 14, 2008 11:00 P.M. (PST)

For more information please contact Patricia Walsh, Public Art Program Coordinator at patricia.walsh@sanjoseca.gov or 408.277.5144 x18.

MACLA presents Cabaret Unkempt

MACLA_Cabaret_Unkkempt.jpg

MACLA’s Performance Art Program presents Cabaret Unkempt
In residence from October 5 - 11

In their week long residency made possible with the support of the National Performance Network, Miami-based performance art duo Jennylin Duany and Elizabeth Doud kick things off by leading a series of community workshops related to performance and body-image at the Billy De Frank LBGT Community Center. Later in the week they perform Cabaret Unkempt, an irreverent and satirical theater piece which uses projected media, music, and poetry to explore Duany's Cuban-American background, her body, her self-image and her moving, often hilarious, experiences as a performer of "size" in a culture where size definitely matters. The work offers audiences a voyeur's pleasure of peeping into a world of sensual audacity to explore moments when all of us, regardless of size, must confront our body-trappings and face our deepest insecurities.

The performers ruminate on the bombastic expectations of control, body mass, plastic surgery and self acceptance in a world obsessed with body image. The work surveys the landscape of "unkempt women," and creates a cartography of her body's journey.

Workshops: Tuesday 10/7 and Wednesday 10/8, 4pm – 8pm
The group holds a two-day workshop to address the effects of body prejudice and its effects on society and individuals. The second meeting is intended to build upon the first. It is recommended that participants attend both sessions.
Admission: Free of charge
Location: The Billy de Frank LGBT Community Center
938 Alameda, San Jose, CA 95126
(408) 293-3040

Performances: Friday 5/10 and Saturday 5/11
Doors: 7:30pm, Show: 8pm
For two nights in a row the duo performs Cabaret Unkempt, their full-length multi-disciplinary theater piece.
Admission: $7-10 at the door
Location: MACLA’s Castellano Playhouse
510 S. First Street, San Jose CA, 95113

The Changing World of Abstract Art by Lillé Mc Ghee-Queen

Lillie_Trieste.jpg
Over the Edge, Lillé Mc Ghee-Queen

Caffé Trieste presents: "The Changing World of Abstract Art!" - Lillé Mc Ghee-Queen, Artist

Artist's Reception: First Friday, OCTOBER 3, 2008 - 8pm 'til late

The Artist combines selected paintings from her 20th and 21st Century Abstract
Art Galleries -- "Mother, Nature & Art" (and) "Girlfriends Art Gallery." Each painting is
powerful and engaging, capturing a significant moment and message in history.

The Artist begins with a clear vision: a vivid image, a single brush stroke which ultimately creates texture and design. Splashes of vibrant colors bring 'life' to a blank canvas and intricately woven into visually striking images, (e.g., Hurricane Katrina, El Nino, Locked Up In Jail, Mount Saint Helen's Eruption, Girlfriends In Jamaica Waters, Global Warming, Silicon Valley 'On-Line', Mother Pregnant W/Child, Black & White Roots, Sand Storms), and more. The experiences are true, the title and story lines are real. The images are UNFORGETTABLE! Lillé will also have available her hand-strung & colorful "trendy" bracelets, her recent inspirational books as well as free copies of the Women's Connection Magazine.

Exhibit on view through October 25, 2008

SarahBeth.jpg

Sarah Beth Gon?arova's Swing Like Tarzan, Baby presents over 40 paintings and collages created from 2005 to last week. Shown will be highly textural pieces on plaster and on paper, her whimsical collages, as well as a collection of recent oil paintings.

Sarah Beth Gon?arova earned her BFA in sculpture and extended media from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts and a Master's degree in Architecture from the University of Maryland. She shows frequently in galleries throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, and has exhibited in group shows in New York and in Europe. She has work in numerous private collections in the US and abroad. Her work features people, usually in pairs, who are connected by an unspoken tension.

Nadia_Oct.jpg

Interpretation of Color features the dynamic paintings by Nadia Vinogradova "I would like to talk to you using a language of color. This language is elegant and naive, beautifull and confusing, bright and dim at the same time. It is not very easy to understand this language sometimes but it is intriguing always."

Nadia Vinogradova was born and raised in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Russia. Although she was at the top of her middle school art class, it was not until her late twenties that she realized that life has a tendency of rolling along, and if she really wanted to be an artist she had to do it now or it would really be too late. By that time she already had a Master's Degree in Physics, was getting ready to defend her Ph.D. thesis, and all that had made her smart enough to take a night class at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.

After attending Toronto School of Art, Nadia took studied with artists Michail Petrenko and Anatoly Zaslavky, member of the International federation of Artist (IFA) in Russia. Nadia is a member of The Pacific Art League and The Atelier School of Classical Realism in Oakland.

Encouraged by a quick success at the student’s show in Toronto, Nadia has exhibited her works at several juried shows in Toronto, New York and the Bay area. Many of Nadia Vinogradova's works are now in private collections in Canada, the US and Russia.
