Knitting Opportunity to help an Artist

FlowerKnit.jpg

Dear knitting community,

My name is Elizabeth Gómez and I am a visual artist living in Redwood City. I am writing to invite you to knit one flower or one bird from leftover yarn you may have. The birds and flowers will be part of an installation that will be at the Oakland Museum of Art this coming fall.

My artistic proposal is related to the idea of solving community problems, including our environmental impact, collectively. One flower, one bird at a time, we can all collaborate to improve our neighborhoods.

If you are interested, please send me an e-mail: elizabeth@hexabus.com
Thank you!

The installation will have a feminine look to it, since I believe women are powerful volunteers. There will be a room covered with knitted flowers and birds. In the center of the room, there will be a large round container filled with black coal. The flowers and birds not touching the coal fountain will be bright and colorful, the birds and flowers next to the fountain, will be grey. It is a simple visual display on how pollution affects life. We must work together as a ‘knitted’ community to lighten our footprint on the planet.

If you are interested in taking part of this project, you can email me and I can send you patterns for both a flower and a bird. You can also make any bird or flower that you like. The only rule is that you re-use leftover yarn, or any other textile, and make a flower or bird about the size of your palm (4” to 5”). I will need to take everything to the museum by mid-August.

Every person taking part of this project will have their name displayed by the installation. I believe it is going to be a beautiful project. I am very excited because I have already enlisted help from women groups back in Mexico. I will get flowers from an indigenous Mayan cooperative in Yucatan, as well as from homemakers in Mexico City. I would love to add your flower or your bird to this project!
