Siddhartha Year by Bryson Bost at KALEID Gallery

Bost_March14

KALEID Gallery presents:

Siddhartha Year by Bryson Bost

We've entered, the year of the horse, and the horse, is the dog's best friend. As a water dog through birth, I am quite optimistic. 2013 was a snake-year, yet for many people I've come across, it was more of a 'Siddhartha Year' than anything else. It seems there was much double-edged learning, and life-altering reflections, and unique stretches of turmoil that emerged.

Perhaps the number 13 had something to do with it. Yet, there are always certain years during our lives that so much 'real living’ is consolidated within a single calendar year, and thus, we must wear many hats therein. Hopefully, we come to some greater understanding of what it is that serves everyone in such a way that ... I have to say it again, it's my motto, 'everyone gets a piece.' I give you thanks.

Bryson Bost has been privileged to exhibit his works throughout San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and Burlingame. As an artist, he enjoys providing many details to those who pause, and stand before his works. Thankful to have lived in Hong Kong, Mexico, and Japan for three years respectively, Bryson has been influenced by the nature of the land and the people of distant places, as much as his favorite sanctuary, 'the Bay Area.'

Artist's Reception: First Friday March 7th, 7–11pm
Free and open to the public. Part of the South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk

FRACTURE by Andy Wallace at KALEID Gallery

Wallace_March14

KALEID Gallery presents:

FRACTURE by Andy Wallace

Working in diverse mediums including sculpture, carpentry, photography, drawing and painting, Andy Wallace’s process-oriented work sets up a stage for geometric, figurative imagery encoded with social commentary. His stylized renditions of the human form evolved from random experimentation and combining raw materials and mediums.

Andy earned his B.F.A from California University East Bay in 2011. Since then he has shown work in various venues including the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, CA, participated in a juried show at the De Young Museum with fellow college students. Wallace’s work has been included in solo and group exhibitions throughout San Jose including the Art Ark, KALEID Gallery, and various other venues. Today Andy maintains and struggles with continuing personal art while maintaining commercial demands as a display artist.

Artist's Reception: First Friday March 7th, 7–11pm
Free and open to the public. Part of the South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk

Saturday, March 22
8am-6pm live painting, 7-10pm closing reception
“Objectified” Our role as humans living in an urban lifestyle seems to be following the trends of our peers, our community, and the media we are fed. Is this our job? We do have choices, right? Do the living spaces that surround us own us or do we own them? Our Objectified series poses these questions and allows viewers to come up with answers by creating a conversation within the self. What is all this stuff in my living space and why do I choose these material items? There seems to be a sort of cohesive relationship built between animate and inanimate objects in the home. We want to entice you to explore four powerful examples of common living spaces that will come alive through human models fashioned with body paint.

Come see the RV—first time exhibited in the Bay Area. And a brand new room created just for this special exhibitions closing reception. Enjoy a special tasting of themed foods inspired by the installations (suggested donation of $8 for the tasting, entry is free)
Free and open to the public.

Membership offer:
All people who join as new members of Works/San José during the month of March will receive a special signed 5”x7? print from the “Objectified” series.

Calling All Artists: Meet & Greet Don Gagliardi Event

"If the world were clear, art would not exist." ~Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus

But the world is not clear, and art does exist thanks to all of you.

We hope you'll come to Anno Domini this Thursday night so that District 3 (downtown) San Jose City Council candidate Don Gagliardi can meet you. Don understands how important art is to one's life and community. Even if you don't live in District 3, it's going to be vital to get him into office because all of San Jose will be impacted by the way downtown values (or doesn't value) the arts and their creators. (There's many ways to help even if you're not a D3 resident that we'll discuss.)

Art isn't just a thing, it's people. And we want Don to see your faces, hear your stories and keep in mind your dreams of the life we want here in San Jose when he's making important decisions that will affect us all should he get a seat on the San Jose City Council. Let's make sure that happens, we need progressive city leadership towards the art and soul of our city.

Beverly Rayner: Museum of Mesmerism & Psychic Art

Victorian pinned effigy (voodoo doll by Beverly Rayner

We highly recommend the "Beverly Rayner: Museum of Mesmerism & Psychic Art" currently on view at the Triton Museum of Art through April 18th.

This exhibition will feature work from the collection of The Museum of Mesmerism & Psychic Phenomena, which Rayner established in Bzinica Stara, Poland in 1999, while researching her ancestral roots. Her research led her to a mysterious abandoned building, which records indicated was last owned by her great-great aunt, Bronka Katarzyna. This building was crafted by a mystical order of seers and conjurers that established an outpost in Bzinica Stara centuries ago and was restored and renovated for the museum, revealing many secret chambers, conjuring and spell-casting devices, Mesmeric and illusionist tools, spirit photographs, inexplicable objects, and enigmatic scripts that defy all attempts at translation. ~Triton website
