Guieu, Salinger Exhibitions at KALEID Gallery

Two new exhibitions opened last Friday featuring Michele Guieu and Karen Carlo Salinger at KALEID Gallery. Exhibitions are on view through November 30th.

Let’s Fight Till Six and Then Have Dinner by Michele Guieu

This installation of drawings and videos is about childhood and its fleeting moments. Everything passes, hence the title, which also refers to the fact that the show opens just a few days before presidential election day. It puts the urge to argue and the hunger for peace in (a childish) perspective.

The drawings hung on the backdrop of the giant leaf are made from pages of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. I see the world Alice visits – and creates at the same time – as a response to the complicated world we live in. In the series of short videos, I watch my two boys as they grow: the way they see the world, the creatures and the monsters they imagine.

Creature Comforts by Karen Carlo Salinger

Suspended animation, medical curiosities, scientific illustrations and biological specimens. Improbable creatures in impossible situations. These are some of the ideas that I incorporate into my drawings, sculpture, and other artwork. I call them my creatures, because that is what they are – unknown organisms that take shape in my mind, the roots of which come from a lifelong interest in strange biology, microscopic life, the human body, and basically anything else ooey, gooey, creepy, strange or unusual.

Volunteers Wanted for Installation at Children's Discovery Museum

Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose (CDM) is preparing for Holidays Unboxed: A Spectacle of Cardboard and Tape partnering with architect Eric Lennartson to design a packing tape installation at CDM. Daily volunteers are needed to help us bring these creations to life beginning on Saturday, December 1st and through Thursday, December 6th.

Our specific volunteer needs and scheduling information are as follows:
We are seeking volunteers for AM and PM SHIFTS on Saturday, December 1st - Wednesday, December 6th. Volunteer on any one day, or for multiple shifts over multiple days. The nature of this work is physical. Volunteers must be comfortable bending and squatting, lifting, and reaching overhead. Standing on ladders may also be a requirement as needed. Volunteers should think of this as a yoga/pilates/gym hybrid experience.

Anyone who is comfortable with these requirements and particularly those in the architectural, design, mechanical engineering, or construction should feel 100% at home with this volunteer gig! College students pursuing design degrees with knowledge of materials and eye for detail… we need you! Craftspeople and makers - you, too! Dancers? Rock climbers? Sure!

Please sign-up to volunteer by adding your company name, first/last name, and checking only the shift(s) for which you are committed to volunteering at CDM. You will receive an email confirmation with detailed information. Sign-up here: http://www.doodle.com/b69sq5yfzn8hi9bt

Frida and Friends 5th Annual Blanket and Art Drive

For the past couple of years we have held this drive to collect blankets for our furry friends at the San Jose Animal Pet Shelter. For this years drive we have decided to add a silent art auction along with the collecting blankets.

Friends and local artists have been asked to donate a pet inspired piece of art for this auction. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to an animal shelter in need. All bidding for art pieces will start at $10.

Please come by, bid and see how inspired we are by our four legged friends.
