Avant Garden 2012 - Call For Silent Art Auction Donations

Veggielution is seeking artists to donate pieces to our silent art auction. We will be hosting an art and food fundraiser, Avant Garden, taking place on Friday, April 13th, 2012, 7-10pm at The Armory in Downtown San Jose.

We are building an interactive and engaging evening around tasty food, live music, and a silent art auction. The program will include farm fresh appetizers/small plates, beverages, local musicians, and video. Veggielution’s mission and programs will be featured, and we hope to inspire farm and food related conversation. We expect to have 300-500 people in attendance.

We are looking for pieces that are connected to food and/or farming in some way. In addition to a focus on Veggielution, we hope to explore many aspects of food – the land, people that work the land, farm worker rights, rural and urban settings, gardening, eating together creating community, food justice, food insecurity, childhood food memories, taste, and any other connections you can make.

We are also looking for handcrafted items that can be offered at a set price (not auction).

Commit to Participate by Wed, March 14th. For full details, please visit the Call for Artists page: http://www.veggielution.org/2012-call-for-artists/

WORKS' Femme Fatale Panel Discussion March 11th

Femme Fatale exhibition panel discussion with the artists: Sunday, March 11, 2pm

The curator and all artists will be present, admission free, with Bake Sale to benefit WORKS!

Exhibition dates: February 3 to March 17, 2012

Femme Fatale is a seductive and haunting exhibition exploring the complexities of femininity. Featuring the work of Bay Area artistsJody Alexander, Connie Begg, Victoria May, Stephanie Metz, and Sylvia Min, Femme Fatale is both a subtle homage and commentary of domesticity, social constructs, and the feminine experience.

Jody Alexander references domesticity and “values” through an installation of found objects carefully wrapped in fabric. Fascinated by history and feminine iconography, Connie Begg illuminates the tension of capturing a frightening yet beautiful object through historical photographic processes. Victoria May’s organza and steel based forms reflect her interest in domesticity, tension, and dichotomy, and allude to the fundamental struggles inherent in the human condition. Utilizing wool fibers and textiles, Stephanie Metz attempts to “distill the essence of a creature” and acknowledges our mammalian roots in her mysterious sculptures. Emphasizing light and shadow, Sylvia Min examines the iconic image of the bride through her paintings.

The artwork, while diverse in form, resonates with overlapping proclivities towards detail, concept, and tone. Monochromatic sculptures, installations, paintings, and photographs seduce and disturb through layers of inherent tensions, enigmatic contrasts, and meticulous handwork.

ArtBox Project _ Call for Artists

ArtBox by Michael Borja at 7th & Santa Clara streets

Phantom Galleries is the artistic curator for the ArtBox Project San Jose. Together with organizer Tina Morrill, we beautify San Jose neighborhoods with original art by local artists on sidewalk utility boxes.

Nearly a dozen boxes have been completed so far and the experience has been incredibly rewarding for the artists and the residents/passersby truly appreciate it.

We have many more boxes in the works especially with the warmer weather coming up and we need more artists!

If you'd like to participate in this project, please send 3-5 jpgs of your work that you think would translate well to this project. Once we've received your submission, we'll then begin to include your work in our presentations to sponsoring neighborhood committees, groups and/or individual sponsors. There is a modest stipend included should your work be chosen.

Please send in your submissions & short bio soon!

Shannon Amidon, Andre Hart Solo Exhibitions at KALEID April 6th

Selcouth new work by Shannon Amidon
I’m a collector of the odd and beautiful, the repulsive, rare and mysterious; objects that occupy the space between familiar and bizarre. Inspired by the seventeenth century age of exploration and cabinets of curiosity, this series comes from place of discovery and wonder where insects, specimens and other objects come together and tell a story.

By interlacing art, science, and culture I explore the connection between man-made and natural objects; evoking a strong sense of nostalgia for the classic age of exploration and discovery.

Of War and Peace, The Truth Just Twists, It's Curfew Gull Just Glides a collection of paintings by André Hart
In the middle of lies and truth, the work embodies a painful awareness of maybe a social and personal outlook. The paintings–or more of a collection of stories–people know or should know around a plain and sometimes encrypted picture of the state of the world. Though I couldn't totally say what these stories are fully about in a more specific term, I like to keep things general but still obvious. I cannot self analyze my work to the fullest degree, but I could give some insight to it. In all, as an artist I could never single myself to one form of work or commit to a label, but I can assure the work is always with the intentions to bring much thought and insight.

Looking at traditions and aesthetics of how art can be used in society, questioning how this relates to my art practice outside and within the gallery context.
