KALEID's Jean Davis at UC Berkeley Ext. Art & Design Center Gallery

Nine on the Line

Opening Reception: Thursday, 5 August 2010 (7-9pm)
Exhibition: 5 August - 16 September

UC Berkeley Extension Art & Design Center Gallery is proud to present “Nine on the Line,” a multimedia exhibition showcasing works by nine Northern California artists. Jean Davis, Scott Durcanin, Heather Hayashi, Darpana Kapil, Fei Li, Cherie Pinsky, Susan Sternberg, Michelle Tan, and Victor Zubeldia have come together to share with viewers a visceral celebration of life and a glimpse into the human soul.

With mixed media, Jean Davis creates realist and surrealist portraits that reflect a personal global perspective of people, celebrating humanity’s diversity of culture and the physical expressions we all embody.

In a combination of witty titles and painted abstractions, Scott Durcanin’s work expresses the anxiety from the decline of the US financial markets and employs mockery to add levity to the often catastrophic events.

Through abstract acrylic and watercolor paintings, Heather Hayashi’s work represents freedom and harmony, using organic forms or meandering lines in an expressionist yet purist form inspired by eastern philosophy.

Shown through the work of Darpana Kapil, life-size portrait paintings capture the divine energy being emanated by all humans, from ancient deities to street musicians the creative power that lies in all humanity is made visible.

The surreal figurative oil and watercolor paintings of Fei Li reveal metaphysical possibilities of human transcendence and withstanding beyond physical barriers, distances, and the erosions of time.

Cherie Pinsky’s paintings of San Francisco landscapes and works from life invite the viewer to join in an intimate visual poetry, evoking the sensuality of an environment and enveloping the viewer in a mysterious wonderland of color.

Through works that range from traditional painting to 3-D conceptual pieces, Susan Sternberg’s introspective on American identity raises universal questions about who we are, and invites the viewer to share experiences which are not only personal, but transcends definitions of country border and time.

Michelle Tan’s multimedia works on paper depict human inequality and squalor, yet by contrasting harsh and delicate shapes, she reveals a glimmer of hope in the ever-present beauty of humanity’s ability to change the world for the better.

Through figurative and surreal oil painting, Victor Zubeldia reveals the internal and yet universal struggles of humanity leading to unconditional love and compassion, in an epic journey of transformation.

Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School San Jose presents:

Highborn Lady of the Fallen World

An imperious woman girded in anachronistic finery, having traveled to our age through means strange and unexplained, has made her way to Silicon Valley. Although half of what she says is indecipherable due to a lilting, garbled accent, it is obvious that there is some message that she wishes to communicate to the illustrious student body of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. In her possession are images of the strange and dilapidated world that she and her ilk rule, which we believe is supposed to communicate a dire warning of some distant calamity. In order to put her message into proper context, we have persuaded her to pose for our August convocation so that we may render her likeness and thus immortalize her communiqué.

Tamar Belson at Red Berry Cafe

Acrylic paintings by Tamar Belson at Red Berry Cafe

"In this series of paintings I used basic colors and their combinations to create a play of contrasts. Warm and cold colors, lines and shapes on colorful surfaces and circles on squares - being some of them. I am always attracted to the powerful interaction between these contrasts and offer the viewer a surprising and vivid outcome." ~Tamar Belson

Tamar Belson was born and raised in Israel. She earned a civil engineering degree from the Technion, Israel in 1991 and worked as an engineer in the following years. In 1998, Tamar and her family moved to California, where she studied photography and art.?She lives in Los Altos, California with her husband and four sons and actively pursues further development as an artist.

A Box of One Acts at Works Gallery

Cardboard Box Theatre Project’s A Box of One Acts presents four new one-act plays by Bay Area playwrights and features both new and returning actors and directors. The collection of works extends CBTP beyond its previous productions, as the works offer not only comedic moments but also serious contemplations of relationships, personal obstacles, and the desire to evolve or change. Although each one-act play presents a very different world, all works feature common threads of transition and redefining relationships. (Parental guidance suggested due to language and content.)

A Box of One Acts: Julie Jigour’s Adeline provides a glimpse into the psychological ramifications of lost love as a mother and daughter struggle in different ways to battle their personal demons. Chad Eschman’s Migration introduces us to a restless young assistant who develops an unexpected friendship with an unusual, but remarkably astute young boy. Molly Murphy’s Sex Ed charts a realistic and contemporary vision of sex, relationships, and codes between brothers. Phi Le’s It Ain’t Over Easy offers a noir-style murder mystery with philosophical and feline undertones.

Coexist & Bisect

Two new manifestations by René Lorraine

René Lorraine's latest work is a fascinating take on man coexisting with unfamiliar species, ideals, and life styes that one may find on this earth. Coexist deals with embracing differences between souls and the shells they reside in, and is an unbeatable experience involving a harmonious dance between crisp clean line, and free-flowing watercolor pigments. Bisect is about the challenges one person may have desiring two very different life styles.  The delicate graphite mimic's the fine line of having balance and not.

René Lorraine is a graduate of San Jose State University with a BFA in Pictorial Arts, and an A.A in Painting.

Ras_Kfeature.jpg

Shadows of Light, from the Hidden Sun A vision of the Authentic self by Ras Lowe.

Ras Lowe is a graduate from San Jose State University, MA, Urban Planning, and BA, in Black Studies-( African American Studies) He has lived in San Jose since 1969 and is retired  currently teaching (Japanese Swordsmanship)  Ken-do at SJSU.

DOLLHOUSE call for submissions

Arc Studios and Gallery DOLLHOUSE" exhibition Dec 4th - Jan 15th

"Dolls are substitutes for humans, and are used in both childhood and adult play. A plastic doll, robot, sock monkey, paper doll, rag doll, nutcracker, marionette, soldier, voodoo effigy and blowup sex toy, they are all repositories of our fears, fantasies, and desires. We love them, we fear them; we cherish them, we tear them apart; we talk to them, they talk to us. We imbue them with our imaginary life and in return they transport us into their worlds. For the Holiday Season, Arc Gallery will be figuratively transformed into a giant dollhouse for one-of-a-kind dolls and dollhouses. Artists are invited to liberally interpret their concept of 'dolls' and 'dollhouses,' and bring to life a creature or world from your wildest imaginings."
