Graphic Storytelling as Activism

Graphic Storytelling as Activism
Euphrat Museum at Deanza College

Artists include: Seyed Alavi, Oliver Chin, Charisse Domingo and De-Bug, Sharon Hing, Keith Knight, Lingshan, America Meredith, Favianna Rodriguez, Shorty Fatz

Graphic Storytelling as Activism presents a variety of art forms, including cartoons, political posters, digital art, book art, and more to explore a range of imagery with an activist bent. It began with graphic storyteller Keith Knight, who sees comics and cartooning as a powerful tool for social change. They have been “communicating information, concepts, and ideas since the days of hieroglyphics. They can transcend language, class, and race. Knowing the tools and concepts of cartooning allows anyone to be a mass communicator… You don’t need a million dollars. Just a pen and a piece of paper.”

In this exhibition we took Knight’s ideas a bit farther, adding other tools to enable one to build communities through community-based arts, to address issues of the day, locally and globally, and to tell the personal story with the larger context, historically and culturally.

Exhibit dates February 11 - April 17, 2008
Thurs., Feb. 21st, 2:30pm Multi-media presentation in Classroom S-32 with an artists' reception to follow at 4pm at the Euphrat Museum.

Glory Boy Days at Cinequest

While in a SJSU screenwriting class, Paul Encinas conceived and wrote Glory Boy Days and it's showing at the Cinequest Film Festival on March 7th & 8th.

It looks amazing and there's alot of favorable reviews for it's story, cinematography and writing....from the Cinequest site: The pain and ecstasy of being young glow like ember in Glory Boy Days, one of the most extraordinary debuts at Cinequest.

On the day he turns twenty-one, Lando takes stock of his life so far and looks ahead at what the future holds for him. He may be worried about going to college and standing up to his stepfather, but to his friends finding a good party is the concern of the day...

Local friends and former classmates make up the cast and crew, and local hangouts make cameo appearances as well. Glory Boy Days debuted at Slamdance Film Festival, one of only 29 films selected out of 1200. Congratulations Paul and to everyone involved!

Animal Insurrection by Michelle Waters

Roundels by Gianfranco Paolozzi
I was looking in the recycle container full of paper from flexo presses.
That's when I felt the passion again: round surfaces screaming to be used.
I looked at them changing on the floor of my studio.
I had to use my marks, my moments on the surfaces as a sign of me being there.
That's when the roundels were born.

Urge Congress to Support the Artists Deduction Bill

Artists are often, very often, asked to donate their time, talent and finished art products to help raise money for non-profit museums, institutions, galleries, community centers, etc, etc, etc.

As it stands now, artists are only allowed the actual price of their materials when giving to a 501c3. Collectors on the other hand, can write off the fair market value. We encourage you to support this bipartisan legislation that will allow fairness to artists donating their work.

Legislation Bill S. 548 or H.R.1524, would allow artists to take a fair-market value deduction for works given to and retained by nonprofit institutions. The U.S. tax system accords unequal treatment to creators and collectors who donate tangible works (e.g., paintings or manuscripts) to museums, libraries, educational or other collecting institutions. A collector may take a tax deduction for the fair-market value of the work, but creators may deduct only their "basis" value—essentially the cost of materials such as paint and canvas.

It takes just two minutes to support this bill....click here.
