Help artist Leah Jay get her beautiful book "Amphibian Love: an artbook for the frogs" printed.

It will be a hardbound, landscape format book full of beautiful watercolor art. Each illustration will feature a realistic frog, salamander, newt, or toad in richly detailed color, with a matching rhyme painted artfully into each picture. Opposite the art will be basic information about the animal you see, including scientific name, habitat, and endangered status. (And the book itself is eco-friendly utilizing recycled paper with soy-based inks.)

Studio 1039 and AtreyArt present “EYE TEA,” a lively art exhibition on Saturday April 11th, 2015 from 7-11:00 p.m. at the Citadel Gallery in San Jose, CA . The one night pop-up event is free and open to the public. Come view this amazing show featuring over 40 artists reflecting on the effect of social media in the modern world here in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Live music will be performed by: Chris Reed, Sweet Hayah, and MC-Dj Mandiesl

Co-curated by Erica Atreya and Thérèsa Merchant, the EYE TEA exhibition showcases work across a variety of mediums, including photography, painting and installation. From utilizing social media to share work, to confronting the possibility of theft or plagiarism, social media has specific consequences for artists. EYE TEA (as in I.T.) originally refers to Information Technology used to create, develop and support computers and the Internet. The artwork reflects both positive and negative responses that have arisen out of using these now ubiquitous machines and information technology. Not only does Information Technology (I.T.) help us organize and do various tasks far more easily, it also gives us the power to connect information and people from both across the street and across the world. What we are facing is a growing revolution in our social structures as a result

The Alternative Press Expo returns to San Jose, CA for the first time in 15 years when the 2015 edition of the event opens its doors on October 3-4 in downtown San Jose.

Founded in 1994 by SLG Publishing owner Dan Vado, The Alternative Press Expo (or APE as it is more commonly known) began life as a comics convention that spotlighted and celebrated independent publishers, cartoonists and creators. The spotlight widened soon after to include publishers of any size doing non-mainstream (superhero) comics. After the event moved to San Francisco, APE widened its scope yet again to include artists who were not necessarily producing comics.

APE-POP is a series of Pop-Up shops, gallery events and happenings that kicked off at Anno Domini during the South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk on April 3rd.

We are honored that artists Mark Badger (Doctor Strange, Excalibur), Crab Scrambly (Everything Can Be Beaten, Your Skeleton is Showing), John Hageman Jr (Woodland Welfare Manifesto), Donny Foley, Michael Foley, and Jef Bambas (Model: A) will be showcasing their artwork along with having books and prints of their work available for purchase.

Exhibition ends Saturday April 11th at 5pm.

Making New Art from Old Books

Give discarded books a new life in this altered books workshop. Projects are designed to show off your love of books and make use (or re-use) of their shape, format and content. We will be creating a variety of unique pieces including: A hanging bookmobile, book page envelopes, paper feathers, flowers and more.

In addition several other “Repurposed” book projects will be shown and discussed so you’ll go home with plenty of ideas.

Also on view tonight is "Alone Together" group photography show at Empire Seven.

These images explore the myriad ways we are isolated while in the midst of society. These images also examine the sometimes tenuous and fleeting connections that occur despite our isolation.

Solitude is an abiding fact of human existence; one could even say that our self-awareness and consciousness create isolation. To be self-aware is to understand the self-in relation to the world, as separate. Connection is also a defining human characteristic; as social animals we crave and rely on connection above all other conditions.

Isolation and separation have multiple dimensions. Social boundaries and rules divide us; we can be inches from another person on a bus or train but be separated by conventions of interaction. Class, color, and creed also establish or maintain barriers.

Connection permeates our lives; despite our need for occasional respite we require interaction and intimacy more. We are now intertwined by electronic means even as we are also crowded together in busy offices, factories, and streets. Even when we are alone memories of interaction, images, and digital linkages persist.

These photographs explore the duality and contradiction of our isolation and connection.
